The module aims at imparting skills and knowledge on the process of water resource planning and management. The specific topics include systems analyses, identifying problems and opportunities, inventorying and forecasting conditions, formulating alternative plans, evaluating alternative plans, comparing alternative plans, and selecting a plan while engaging various stakeholders in collaboration and dialogue. It provides an opportunity to study and understand fundamental theories, concepts and tools that are relevant to the assessment, planning and management of water resources.
The module discusses the application of the knowledge of economics, aquatic ecosystems, hydrology and their interrelationships with the planning and management of water systems and resources. The module will focus on the multi-disciplinary and multi-objective nature of water resources planning and management including an understanding of relevant policies. The role of crosscutting issues such as politics, poverty, gender, equity, development and sustainability in water resources governance are also discussed.
At the end of this module, students will be able to demonstrate knowledge of key concepts and processes of water resources planning and management, apply multi-criteria decision analysis to solve problems in water resources and demonstrate knowledge of political, social, legal, institutional, environmental and technical issues in water resources management
